Welcoming New Beginnings in Spring

As we roll into March and the start of Spring here in the UK, I’m reminded just how wonderful this season is for fresh starts and new beginnings. There’s something about the lighter evenings, (sometimes) sunnier days and all of those beautiful new buds and blooms just starting to peek out after their winter slumber. Spring is the time to shake off the stuffiness of winter and it’s a wonderful time of year to practise mindfulness as there’s always something new to take note of as you go about your day. 

 

If you’re lucky enough to live near a park or the open countryside, a brisk spring walk can be the perfect way to blow those cobwebs away. Take in the sounds of the birds, and notice the ways in which they’re getting ready for nesting season, flitting and frolicking amongst the hedgerows. Notice the colour of the spring grass coming through. Bright and emerald green. Notice the clouds drifting across a brilliant blue sky. Are they white and fluffy or do they bring the threat of rain? 

 

Take note of which trees are early risers, flaunting their blossoms and budding leaves. Notice the daffodils, snowdrops and crocuses, the shades of yellow, purple and white. Pay attention to the smells in the air. Can you smell the florals, or a hint of freshly cut grass after a tentative first mow of the year? 

 

But you don’t need to have access to the countryside to notice these first signs of spring, there’s so much to be seen, even on a quick walk around the block. 

 

Spring is also a great time of the year to get organised. The annual spring clean is your chance to throw the windows open to bring fresh air into your home, and get to all of those tasks you’ve been putting off. The sunnier, warmer days are a great motivator and you’d be amazed at just how much you can achieve within an hour. Perhaps it’s time to go through your wardrobe, or do some decluttering. Movement matters, and even if you just manage to change your bed at the weekend, take that as a win! 

 

Spring is the time of rebirth, and it’s the perfect time to review any goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year, or even to create some new ones. It’s always difficult setting new year’s resolutions, as January and February are the darkest and coldest months and do little for our motivation. March and April are the months to take action and start to sow the seeds so that they can blossom and bloom over the summer and autumn months. Take a few minutes to reflect on your daily habits, what are you proud of, and what would you like to change or adjust? 

 

With all of this glorious sunshine and positive energy in the air, it’s easy to over-do it. So, just remember to be kind to yourself, too. You should never feel like you have to spend an entire day cleaning or working in the garden, or even going on a 10 mile walk. Do what feels good and right for you, and remember to stay present in the moment. Spring is a truly beautiful time of the year, and there are always plenty of small moments to take a breath and notice something new.
